Live Review: Wye Oak and Tuskha - Mohawk, Austin, TX

On an exceptionally brutal summer evening Wye Oak played the last show of their tour at Mohawk. The air surrounding the outdoor venue was thick and hot causing defective equipment and sweat in undiscovered body crevices. Nonetheless, the show drew a substantial crowd of die-hards and sets went on without a hitch. Wye Oak’s supporting band Tuskha, another duo, was the only opener.

Tuskha played a set of songs that would draw comparisons and please fans of Alt-J. Their mellow electronic and world

Slomatics - Future Echo Returns

In the spirit of full transparency Slomatics have created a heavy album that is so admirably edited and executed in concept, it’s probably my favorite release this year. Whirling synthesizers usher in ‘Estronomicon’, an instrumental manifestation of an album that is fully dedicated to the build. Its steady climb through an odyssey of sound so ominous and overtaking is worth joining for the full 7 tracks. The first song and subsequent moments play like a meditative 80s fantasy movie score. Hellvete / Bear Bones, Lay Low - Spliff Tape

I chose to listen to this split while I was at work to encourage concentration. Drone and ambient music are essential for those moments when my boss is about to find out I’m behind because I spent an hour on Buzzfeed (because I NEED to see the weirdest Airbnbs in Prague). My intentions backfired when I entered into one of the more exquisite zone out sessions I’ve had. Oaken Palace Records has put out a split that definitely transports you. The fact that the label is committed to donating proceed

Live Review: Torche, Wild Throne & Eagle Claw - Barracuda Austin, Texas

Between the three acts of the night there was a unifying thread of tomfoolery and self stokedness. Although the styles of each band varied, their overall presence and personalities diminished any pretension with jokes and good banter. Just getting it out of the way, but the party vibes at this show were abundant and aggressive. It appeared that 98% of this venue was wasted. The rowdiness progressed throughout the night into a bro-dodging dance to avoid spilled beers and falling grown ass adults.

Live Review: Levitation Showcase - Chelsea Wolfe - Mohawk, Austin

Looming grey clouds hugged the venue and surrounding blocks in downtown Austin as pre-Levitation shows went on as planned. I opted to catch the Chelsea Wolfe and Pinkish Black showcase. Considering the cancellation washout (sorry) that hit a few hours prior, the overall atmosphere of Mohawk didn’t hold any visible bitterness. Everyone was at attention for the bands as the crowd gradually increased throughout the night. Local lords of sound Worshiper Cabinets back lined the bands and demonstrated
